BRITAIN'S former Olympic and World loo metres champion, Linford Christie, said yesterday that Britain will never produce another loo metre Olympic champion.
Christie, disqualified from the loo metres final for two false starts, told the English newspaper the Daily Mirror that the lack of funding for British sport was the mason why Britain was left struggling at the bottom of the medals table.
"You have to worry whether this country can ever hope to discover and develop a replacement for me. It's a tragedy," Christie said.
"I don't think we have any chance. When I go there will be an enormous gaping hole that won't be filled.
Christie (36), used the dilapidated stadium in west London which is named after him as an example of the dismal facilities which Britain's finest sportsmen and women are forced to make do with.
"How can we breed future Olympic champions in such surroundings?" he said.
"Me and other members of the club are forced to change into our running gear before we arrive. The whole scene is so disheartening. It makes you wonder how high track and field really rates in Britain.
"I feel particularly sad because I was raised in that area, close to Wormwood Scrubs prison and the famous old White City Stadium.
"I don't think we have any chance - there will never be another Linford Christie."
