Trainer Toby Balding yesterday called for action to avoid another "small field" Grand National.

"This year with just 27 runners was just too low," said Balding who won the Aintree marathon with Highland Wedding in 1969 and Little Polveir 20 years later.

"I don't know what the answer is but it's a problem that has to be addressed."
