A chara, What a wonderful idea expressed by Eamon de Buitlear in his letter of February 15th to celebrate the millennium by planting trees. Only let us not confine it to a millennium celebration. It is also of paramount importance to ensure the protection of the many wonderful trees that we have inherited.
Last Saturday morning I witnessed the destruction of an evergreen oak. These trees virtually unique to the Rahen St Anne's Park Estate area of Dublin this particular one was in a copse in the Clontarf area. And one is also left wondering about the recent fate of a few similar trees in the same copse.
Complacency towards the safety of such trees is misplaced. One can so easily take for granted the presence of wonderful trees, and only realise how vulnerable they are when they are threatened with destruction or are already destroyed. Mise le meas, Furry Park Road, Killester, Dublin 5.
