Sir, - I was glad to learn that Ireland's international soccer manager, Mick McCarthy, has refrained from naming Clinton Morrison in his squad to face Denmark next month. There has been much debate in recent years over what constitutes "being Irish", a topic much highlighted by Tony Cascarino's recent biography. Over the years we have been served loyally by many second-and third-generation Irish, some with rather dubious links to the home sod. McCarthy himself, along with John Aldridge, Ray Houghton, Andy Townsend and many others, have given blood, sweat and tears for the green jersey. Regardless of their ties to Ireland they were all bonded by one thing - a desire to play for Ireland and an unquestionable commitment once selected. In the case of Morrison, his Sky Sports appeal to Sven Goran Ericsson for an England call-up suggests that his loyalties lie elsewhere. In the likely event that an England call is not forthcoming, I hope that McCarthy has the courage to maintain his stance. Morrison is aware of McCarthy's interest; if he has no desire to make Ireland his first country of choice, there should be no going back. In my mind a second-rate player who is committed to the national team deserves a place before anyone with Morrison's attitude. - Yours, etc.,John Stokes, Riverwood Court, Castleknock, Dublin 15.
