Madam - It was with a sense of deep sadness that I read your report of the Catholic Bishops condemnation of Fr Sean Fagan's book, Does Morality Change? (August 3rd). Fr Fagan's life and work as a moral theologian has consistently tried to show how faith can illuminate contemporary moral dilemmas. His book has inspired, supported and challenged many people. Rather than condemning it the Bishops should encourage scholarship which addresses contemporary moral issues in an open, frank and exploratory fashion, thus ensuring that faith becomes a lived reality in the lives of believers. - Yours, etc.,
