Seanad on the move

Sir, – Criticism (July 20th) of my suggestion that Seanad Éireann could be moved temporarily to the unused Senate House in Stormont (July 19th) cites the constitutional requirement that the Houses of the Oireachtas meet "in or near the city of Dublin". However, the relevant clause in the Constitution continues "or in such other place as they [the Houses of the Oireachtas] may from time to time determine".

I did say I was writing in serious vein. A favour requested from south to north might have a more welcome response than the silly cries for a Brexit-based referendum on Ireland’s unity. There is nothing to be had in a united Ireland that is not there now. Full recognition of the present situation by all parties and the people should suffice for the next hundred years. – Yours, etc,
