DAVID GRIFFIN,
Sir, - Is anyone really surprised that Provisional IRA/Sinn Féin refuses to recognise the Police Service of Northern Ireland or join the Policing Board? Surely not!
We are now told by a House of Commons Committee that the Provisionals raise £8 million from smuggling, extortion and bank robberies. Other nefarious activities include brutal punishment beatings and various forms of street violence, while the leadership of IRA/Sinn Féin cannot even bring itself to condemn the cowardly attempt to murder a young catholic nationalist recruit to the P.S.N.I.
Rather than expressing concern at Sinn Féin's refusal to join the Policing Board, all right-minded law abiding citizens should be mightily relieved.
Would the Southern public welcome Provisional Sinn Féin/IRA in a management and oversight role in matters concerning law and order? - Yours, etc.,
David Griffin,
Magherally,
Co Down.
