Postal services and the Irish language

Sir, – Irish is one of the two official languages of this country. A company with a name like An Post should be aware of that. I was shocked this week when a small parcel I had posted to Inis Meáin on December 7th did not arrive for nine days due to the fact that the Irish spelling of the island name was used on the address. When it was finally delivered on December 16th, An Post had put a sticker with “Inishmaan” on it.

Inis Meáin is one of the parishes in Ireland where Irish is spoken by everyone. It is an insult to the island that this is not respected by An Post, and to delay delivery for nine days for this reason is disgraceful. – Yours, etc,
