Madam, – That Cardinal Brady should be surprised that his statement of support for Bishop Magee caused offence, is further evidence of the disconnect between elements of the church hierarchy and lay members like myself.

I say elements because Archbishop Diarmuid Martin’s comments on the affair led me to believe that he, at least, was in favour of Bishop Magee stepping aside.

How can the cardinal state that Bishop Magee is accepting responsibilities for his shortcomings when he remains in post – it beggars belief that the cardinal can’t see that only by resigning will Bishop Magee be seen to have accepted responsibility for the awful shortcomings of his diocesan procedures. – Yours, etc,
