Overreach and intrusion by tech giants

Sir, – Calls for a digital age of consent, and for greater education on the kinds of information service providers take from us, and the uses to which they put it, entirely miss the point.

Facebook could send an employee to your house to explain face-to-face precisely what they do in words of one syllable, and people would still sign up in droves because it remains a valuable service and we want to use it. The only solution to overreach and intrusion by tech companies, and big business in general, into our lives is strict regulation by governments. Do not make them tell us what nefarious schemes they are up to – most people simply do not care enough. Stop them doing it. – Yours, etc,

ALAN EUSTACE,
