Sir, - I am amazed that Rev Michael Manning (July 3rd)doesn't seem to be aware that in the time that Christ lived, there was no Christian Church. It wasn't formed until many years later. If Christ sacrificed himself, he did it for people (Jews and pagans, not for a church that didn't exist. All the stories in the Gospels make this clear.
Since women are half the people, I can't see why they cannot undertake this role. If self-sacrifice is the model to follow, surely women have more experience of it than men. - Yours, etc.,
