Local democracy and cleaning the streets

Sir, – The 12th of July signals the start of the real tourist season in our resort of Bundoran. It is also, probably, the busiest day for tourism of the year.

Why, in its wisdom, Donegal County Council decided not to deploy the street sweeping machine and cleaning staff on the morning of the 13th beggars belief.

This would never have happened during the tenure of Bundoran Town Council.

The abolition of local councils is having an adverse impact on the maintenance of our local areas and will ultimately hit our revenues from tourism. The debate about refuse collection charges is largely irrelevant if the State cannot keep the streets of our country clean. – Yours, etc,
