Voluntary hospitals and the HSE
Sir, – Here we go again!
Another “voluntary” hospital, paid for by the State but not under State control, engages in unorthodox financial practices and makes payments to senior staff contrary to Government guidelines (“Holles Street subsidised cash flow of semi-private clinic, HSE finds”, News, July 12th).
Voluntary hospitals are run by boards of management that are unelected by the hospital users and report to no-one but themselves. There are no written guidelines for choosing board members.
Isn’t it time we took control of voluntary hospitals, on the basis that every State hospital should be managed by people employed by and fully answerable to the State? – Yours, etc,
