Sir, - I have great difficulty understanding why, if the Government and Road Safety Authority are genuine in their desire to reduce road deaths, they have not introduced compulsory use of headlamps at all times. According to the Swedish statistics the introduction of day running lights reduced road deaths by 25 per cent and, about three years ago, the introduction of compulsory use of dipped headlamps in daylight, further reduced average impact speeds by an estimated 20 mph.

Surely we don't need to wait any longer to implement such a simple cost effective lifesaver? (No Garda OT required and more opportunity to spot and correct motorists with faulty lights.) I have noticed that Telecom appears to have implemented such a policy over the past few months. Congratulations Telecom! Perhaps you can let us know if this measure has had any impact on your accident rate? Perhaps the Swedish Embassy could also oblige and reproduce the relevant article, which I saw about a year ago (in The Irish Times). - Yours, etc., Michael Lee,

Delgany,

Co Wicklow.
