Geography lessons

Sir, – For all of my life I have lived under an illusion, it seems. I was born in and live in Co Cork, which up until Sunday morning last I always believed was in the south of Ireland. I opened a Sunday newspaper to see a half-page advert for “Ireland’s Ancient East”, telling me that Cork, with a particular emphasis on Cobh, is now part of Ireland East. To further confuse me, on the back page of the same paper I read that “after months of engagement with Fáilte Ireland” part of Co Limerick has now been designated as part of “Ireland’s Ancient East”. Is someone in Fáilte Ireland actually being paid to concoct these confusing and embarrassing illusions? Or has it something to do with the silly season? – Yours, etc,

NOEL HOWARD,

Kilworth,

Co Cork.
