Sir, – Of the multitude of words written about migrants in recent times those most worthy of repeating are the words quoted in your disturbing report by Adam Alexander (Magazine, July 30th), and I quote Gabriele Risica, the Italian doctor on board the ship off the coast of Libya.
He offers a simple diagnosis for what he believes is causing this migration crisis.
“Western countries are responsible for this,” he says. “They start wars and sell weapons everywhere, and they wonder why a few people want to escape these wars. It’s crazy”.
Whether we like it or not Ireland is one of those western countries.
For over a decade we have being supporting the wars which have led to the ever increasing migrant crisis by allowing the use of Shannon Airport for transit of US troops, weaponry and rendition flights.
Surely our political leaders are not so stupid that they cannot see the immorality of Ireland’s position.
