Madam, - For those of us who knew and admired John and Putzel Hunt, it was heartening to read Dr Peter Harbison's letter of February 19th. In listing the achievements of John Hunt, let us not forget the major role he played in the restoration and refurbishment of Bunratty Castle and in setting up the Folk Park at Bunratty. The Mid-West region stands indebted to him for Bunratty, for Craggaunowen and above all for presenting to Limerick his exquisite and supremely important collection of archaeological and historical artefacts.

His two children, Trudy and John Hunt, are freemen of Limerick City and so in some way their generous contribution to the Hunt Museum has been acknowledged; but the great debt of gratitude we in the Limerick Region owe to John Hunt has never been acknowledged as it should have been. During his lifetime he neither wished for nor sought any honours for he was a man of dignified self-effacement. When attempts are made to tarnish his good name, let them not obscure his towering magnanimity, his meticulous scholarship and above all his awesome generosity. - Yours, etc.,

MARY GEARY,

Former President,
