Sir, – I write with regard to the recent articles by both Dr David Grimes, medical physicist, and Niamh Uí Bhriain, spokeswoman for the Life Institute (Opinion Analysis, June 29th and July 4th).
At the heart of the abortion debate lies a moral dilemma, and so it speaks volumes that two articles relying heavily on scientific citations to make opposing points were placed in the opinion section of your paper. Science only goes so far in a moral decision; it provides the facts, but the morals enter in when you choose what value to place on each fact.
Both sides claim to have the majority of the electorate on their side, but if you will use science to support your argument, you must allow for further research, and the only scientific method of finding out what the Irish people think is a referendum.– Yours, etc,
