Madam, – Having been flattened by cyclists on two occasions in the past six months and observing a cyclist collide with a car in Dublin city centre recently, I feel it important to highlight what is an obvious safety problem on our inner city streets.
I welcome the initiatives to introduce more bicycles, but I believe there should be strict road rules for cyclists. I mistakenly thought cyclists needed to observe traffic lights, one-way streets and pedestrian areas just like their motorised counterparts. Apart from the new Dublin Bikes, the majority of bicycles I see have no lights. This is unacceptable during these long dark evenings and I know bikes have been confiscated for such offences in Belfast.
I don’t usually moan about such things but I don’t want the embarrassment of being hospitalised by a Raleigh Sunbeam with streamers. – Yours, etc,
