Easing planning rules for one-off housing makes no sense

Living in towns and villages brings economies of scale and reduces car usage

Sir, – I agree with Kevin O’Shea (Letters, April 29th) in placing emphasis on the social benefits of village or town living versus one-off housing.

One-off housing requires the “one-off” provision of services such as electricity, water, sewage disposal, broadband, etc. These services already exist in villages and towns, with economics of scale driving costs down and the additional benefit of reduced dependency on cars.

Relaxing the planning rules for one-off housing does not make economic sense and will negatively impact efforts to achieve our climate action targets. – Yours, etc,

EAMON O’FLYNN,
