Cleaning up a mess created by the public

Army of workers sent out to cleanse the streets of Dublin early every morning

Sir, – John Fleming (“The pungent aroma of Dublin,” Letters, April 29th) might be amazed if he is ever in Dublin in the early hours to see an army of workers cleaning up from the day before.

The years have witnessed numerous attempts to produce vandal-proof litter bins and there used to be many public toilets in the city, but these became the focus of drug abuse and other forms of antisocial behaviour.

In relation to the Dart, I am hard-pressed to think of any country where urinating on public transport would be tolerated; to blame the authorities for this seems misguided. – Yours, etc,

DAVE ROBBIE,

Booterstown,

Co Dublin.
