In praise of Irish script

The cló Gaelach is an art form, elegant and simple to read

Letters to the Editor. Illustration: Paul Scott

Sir, – I concur with Hilda Geraghty on the beauty of Irish script (Letters, April 29th).

I did my Leaving Cert in 1959 and used the buailte or séimhiú when writing in Irish. I never accepted the H of the Roman script and in fact rather irreverently dubbed it “the hoorin’ h’s”.

By comparison, the Irish script is an art form that I still use when writing as Gaeilge. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – I couldn’t agree more with Hilda Geraghty on the two scripts of Irish – an cló Rómhánach and an cló Gaelach (Letters, April 29th). The latter is indeed a more elegant and simple script to read.

While I wholeheartedly support the publication of the excellent Scéal with this newspaper, a version in the cló Gaelach would be a very welcome development. – Yours, etc,
