Sir, – The tremendous success of our athletes and swimmers at the European Championships is something that has surely given all of us on this island a great lift. It was wonderful to see them proudly drape themselves in our national flag and join with the multitude of Irish supporters in the stadium, waving their own Irish flags, in celebration. For those few moments, all of us, in Birmingham, Paris and at home in Ireland were united in pride at what we can achieve.
It was such a contrast to seeing that same national flag, which was designed as an emblem of tolerance and inclusion, being used by many as a symbol of intolerance and hatred.
I know many of them have grievances that they feel are not being listened to, but to take our national flag and use it in a way that it was never intended to be used is surely not the answer. – Yours, etc,
