A suggestion for Dublin’s Wood Quay

It just requires imagination

Sir, – In 1979, Dublin Corporation insisted it had to have Wood Quay for new Civic Offices and that no other site was possible. It proceeded with the partial destruction of a unique archaeological location.

Now, a mere 45 years later, Dublin City Council says the buildings are not fit for purpose. Was it for this that an irreplaceable heritage was destroyed?

If, as seems to be the case, the city council HQ will move, at least let us take the opportunity to celebrate one of the most important Viking sites in Europe.

Look at York, in England. It has cherished its history and made it work for the city. The Jorvik Viking Centre is a must-see destination. How about developing Wood Quay as a research centre and dedicated Viking museum under the auspices of the National Museum?

Reconstructing some of the features of the original site? Or continuing the excavation?

This is a rare chance for an authority to amend an act of vandalism it committed in the face of public protest. It just requires imagination and a heartfelt love of the city. – Yours, etc,

AUDREY MACCREADY,

Artane,

Dublin 5.
