Tourist tax will squeeze hospitality further

Focus should be on reducing costs, not increasing them

Sir, – Given the chorus of approval greeting the new tourist tax, I wonder why we bother worrying about the cost of visiting Ireland at all (“Tourist tax of up to €5 per night considered for Dublin city," March 19th).

With the cost of flights and pints in Dublin escalating, the Government fails to recognise the significant challenges facing the tourist economy as it is.

At least we can rest easy knowing the money will be prudently spent and value for money obtained by our highly efficient local and national authorities. - Yours, etc,

ALAN COAKLEY,

Roscommon.
