Sir, – It strikes me how there appears to be no mechanism in place to prevent private vehicles from using bus lanes during service hours, or indeed any effort to follow up on violations.
Without stating the obvious, it is imperative that our public transport system works for its service users, but we must also ensure its priority if we are to discourage private vehicle reliance and decrease our nation’s carbon footprint.
It is, therefore, rather infuriating to observe individuals, who apparently deem themselves more important than the rest of us, manoeuvre out of a queue of traffic to drive straight past everyone else waiting in line. These people are neither more important nor in a hurry, simply more impatient.
The worst part is that we, as a community, reward this behaviour because we do nothing. But calling it out is difficult, and we shouldn’t rely on confrontation between individuals.

We could, however, ask the city of Dublin to install bus lane cameras or, better still, establish an online portal for the submission of dashcam footage so that we can all call out and punish those who think they can cheat the system, and get away with it. – Yours, etc,
