Sir, – Further to “Texas shooting: Biden offers comfort but far-reaching gun reforms unlikely” (Martin Wall, Analysis, May 25th), in most other countries around the world, the mass murder of children that were no older than 10 years and their teachers, who paid with their lives while protecting their charges, would almost certainly change attitudes toward the large-scale availability of firearms. But in a nation that supposedly places a premium on the preservation of life, this is sadly not the case.
Be it in Buffalo New York or Uvalde in Texas, the belief in the right to bear arms and the availability of assault weapons is causing unimaginable grief and pain. It is time the United States enacted legislation to curb gun violence dramatically, as this is almost certainly going to happen again sooner rather than later and the people who will be undoubtedly killed are going to be, as they have been so many times before, from all backgrounds and from both sides of the American political divide. – Yours, etc,
RONAN BYRNE,
