Yates to formulate own beef reform proposals

THE Minister for Agriculture is to put forward his own proposals for reforming the EU beef sector

THE Minister for Agriculture is to put forward his own proposals for reforming the EU beef sector. Mr Yates said yesterday a report outlining his position as president of the farm ministers would be tabled in Killarney in September.

The damage to the beef industry caused by the British BSE crisis and ways to balance the over supplied markets will be the theme of the informal EU session.

Mr Yates said he was aware of the plans by the EU Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr Franz Fischler, to reform the sector, which was now necessary because of the BSE crisis. He said his Department would be looking at all options to cut beef production.
