Mangled wrecks of cars are to placed by gardai alongside the main Dublin-Belfast road in the coming weeks in an attempt to reduce road deaths. This follows a sixfold increase in the number of fatal collisions on the road last year.

Gardai in Cos Louth and Meath are to display between eight and 10 wrecks at any one time under the initiative, which was announced yesterday.

The first display is due to be staged near Dundalk before the end of the month. Cars which had been involved in fatal collisions will not be used.

Of 414 road deaths in the Republic last year, 57 were on the N1/M1 Dublin-Belfast road.
