The Workers Party is to run eight candidates in seven constituencies in the general election.

The candidates are Mr Ted Tynan in Cork North Central; Mr Seán O'Cionnaith in Dublin North West; Mr Andrew McGuinness in Dublin Mid-West; Ms Linda Kavanagh and Mr Shay Kelly in Dublin South-Central; Mr Tom Crilly in Dublin South-East; Mr Peter Short in Louth; and Mr John Halligan in Waterford

Speaking at a promotion of the party's campaign today, party president Mr Seán Garland said the candidates would fight the election on health, housing, education and corruption in public life.

"No serious commentator could deny today that the past five years of this Government has seen a continued decline in political life of this country," he said.

"We have more than our fair share of conservative, even reactionary politicians and political parties serving the interests of the rich and powerful. It's time the voice of the vast majority of citizens - the working class - in this country was heard . . . in and outside the Dáil".

Mr Garland also called on Workers Party voters, where the party did not have a candidate, to vote for parties that were closest to the party in policies and priorities.
