Dutch driver Jos Verstappen will test for Jordan next month in what could be the first step towards a Formula One comeback.
The team said that the 32-year-old had a seat fitting at the team's Silverstone factory today for a test at the nearby British Grand Prix circuit on June 1st.
Verstappen drove for Minardi last season but failed to secure a deal with Jordan despite having significant sponsorship.
There has been some speculation that he could replace Germany's Nick Heidfeld later in the year, but Eddie Jordan ruled that out last month, saying both Heidfeld and Italian Giorgio Pantano were secure.
The Irishman told the Jordan website that he was pleased to do what he could to help Verstappen, whose long-term sponsor Trust is now backing the team.
"I think it is fantastic that this test will offer Jos some attention in Formula One," he said. "I believe Jos has a future in Formula One and I hope that this test will be positive and helpful in some way with regards to that future."
Verstappen said he did not know what to expect but was happy to be getting back in a Formula One car.
"We will see at the beginning of June. If everything goes as planned I will be testing for the whole day at Silverstone," said the Dutchman, who was world champion Michael Schumacher's team mate at Benetton in 1994.
The veteran of 107 races has also driven for Simtek, Arrows, Tyrrell and Stewart.
"I am happy that I will be able to drive again and I will also see Eddie Jordan again, as it's been some time since I had direct contact with him," he added.
"I am really curious to see what it's like with the Jordan team and how they will react to me, what they want to tell me."
