Four major US film corporations have decided to sue a Co Meath "video pirate" for damages, following a High Court finding that he had been trading in counterfeit video cassettes for over five years.

In March Ms Justice Laffoy found that Mr Gerard Mulligan, of Claremont Estate, Navan, Co Meath, had persistently infringed the copyright of Universal City Studios Inc, Walt Disney Productions Inc, Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation and Warner Brothers Inc.

The judge said that during the court case a British expert who examined hundreds of the videos had said he believed the counterfeiting was probably a "multi-machine operation" and that a few of the tapes appeared to have been created using a camcorder in a cinema.

A hearing to assess damages for the film corporations will be held in the next court term.
