Two men were charged in Belfast yesterday with possessing £600,000 worth of drugs last weekend.

Mr Conor Craig (23), from Loughview, Stiles Estate, Antrim, and Mr John Francis O'Hara (47), from Bramble Avenue, Newtownabbey, were charged with unlawfully possessing 66 kilos of cannabis resin, found by police when they stopped a car at Sentry Lane, Glengormley, on Sunday.

Mr O'Hara was also charged with supplying drugs and both were charged with intending to supply.

A drugs squad detective described the seizure as very significant. He said the cannabis was due to be distributed in the greater Belfast and Antrim areas, where a major criminal gang was involved in importing drugs from the Continent.

He said the cannabis was in sealed beer crates found in Craig's car.

Police believed the drugs had been imported by O'Hara, who is a long-distance lorry-driver.

Bail applications were refused by the Magistrate, Mr Mark Hamill, and he remanded both men in custody for a week.
