Two held after Cork body find

Gardaí in Cork are poised to begin a murder inquiry following the discovery of a man’s body in the River Bandon.

The body of the 27-year-old man was recovered from the river near the bridge in Bandon at about midnight last night.

The victim had a lucky escape in June 2009 when he fell from a window in the same block of flats and was hospitalised for six months.

"He almost died, he was unconscious for a long time," said one local source.

Gardaí are treating his death as a serious assault and are awaiting the results of a postmortem examination later this morning which is expected to confirm he died violently.

They are satisfied that the man had been involved in a row in a flat in nearby St Finbarr’s Place earlier in the night.

The flat has been cordoned off and forensic experts from the Garda Technical Bureau in Dublin are on their way to the scene.

Gardaí arrested a man and a woman - both in their late 30s - early this morning and brought them to Bandon Garda station.

The two were arrested under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act which allows gardaí detain suspects for up to 24 hours.

Gardaí were alerted shortly after 11pm after they received an emergency call reporting a man being thrown into the river.

The deceased man - who has been identified by gardaí - is from Bandon and is known to officers in the town.
