A mother-of-three children and her mother drowned at the weekend when their car plunged into the River Glashaboy at Riverstown, Glanmire, Co Cork, writes Olivia Kelly.

Ms Kathleen Barrett (42) and her mother, Ms Christine Twomey (69), died after their car collided with another near the Vienna Woods Hotel and swerved across the main road into the river.

Both women were from Ballincollig in Co Cork.

The accident happened at 9 p.m. on Saturday night. Four units of the fire service, navy divers and gardaí from Cobh arrived at the scene shortly afterwards.

It took more than an hour to remove the occupants from the car and both women were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the other car was uninjured but was said to be in a state of shock. It is understood that he made an attempt to rescue the women before the authorities arrived.

Ms Barrett is survived by her husband, Bobby, and three children.
