Two men have been charged following this weekend's arson attack on a house in Derry in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The fire service said a woman and her 10-year-old son were lucky to be alive after being rescued from the fire in a house at Harty Court in the Ballymagroarty area of Derry.

It is understood the occupants of the house were woken by a smoke alarm in the house at around 4.30am after a flammable substance was poured through the letterbox and set alight, trapping them upstairs.

The two men, aged 20 and 18, have been charged with arson with intent to endanger life. They are due to appear before the Magistrates Court tomorrow.

The woman and her son were treated in hospital for smoke inhalation and released a short time later.
