Twenty nine football fans arrested following a riot on O'Connell Street last night will appear in court next month.

Twenty nine football fans arrested following a riot on O'Connell Street last night will appear in court next month.

The Garda is preparing a file for the Director of Public Prosecutions in connection with alleged public order and criminal damage offences.

Gardai were drafted in from around the city after traffic was blocked by around 200 singing fans, who began shouting and chanting slogans at gardai after they were called in to control the situation.

The Garda said a riot developed when the soccer supporters spilled out into O'Connell Street after watching Glasgow Celtic's 'old firm' win over Rangers in local pubs.

A female garda was allegedly spat at and a number of gardaí were verbally abused.

Police helicopters monitored the position as peace was restored to the city centre.

The 29 fans arrested are expected to appear in court around the middle of May.
