Madrid - Police are hunting thieves who made off with 20 masterpieces from one of Spain's most valuable private art collections.

Two paintings by Spanish artist Goya, including The Swing, along with The Temptation of St Anthony by Flemish old master Brueghel and Guitar on a chair by Juan Gris, were snatched at dawn on Wednesday from the Madrid home of Duchess Esther Koplowitz.

The duchess, one of the richest women in Europe who made billions as the head of Spain's largest construction company, was on holiday. Police described the burglary as perfectly organised.

Photos of the missing masterpieces have been sent to Interpol in case the thieves try to sell the works outside Spain. A total of 14 paintings and six sculptures are missing. The Goya masterpieces alone are valued at some 12 million euros.
