Beijing - A severe tropical storm closed down Hong Kong for most of yesterday after leaving a trail of damage in South East Asia, reports Miriam Donohoe.

Typhoon Utor hit Hong Kong after ripping through the northern Philippines and Taiwan on Wednesday and Thursday, killing at least 55 people, injuring more than 70 and leaving over 30 missing.

No storm-related deaths were reported in Hong Kong and affected areas in southeast China. Officials said losses in the Shanwei area in heavily-populated Guangdong province, where the storm landed early yesterday, amounted to 216 million yuan ($26 million) by midday.
