John Toshack was tonight believed to be speaking to Italian club Catania over their managerial vacancy.

Although he had been strongly linked with the Republic of Ireland, Welshman Toshack is the fans' favourite to win control at the Serie B club.

According to reports from the Italian news agency ANSA, he was meeting with directors of Catania tonight in Sicily.

Catania sacked former coach Maurizio Pellegrino after their 2-0 home defeat by Napoli on Tuesday and are currently fourth-bottom in the second tier of Italian football.
