Police were today hunting thugs who vandalised 10 graves in the grounds of a Catholic Church in Co Down.

Three tombstones were smashed and another seven plots were vandalised in the attack at St Patrick's Parish Church, near Scarva.

Officers have appealed to anyone who noticed anything suspicious in the Mullaghglass Road area last night to contact them.

The incident comes just days after Catholic graves were damaged at a church on the outskirts of Belfast.

Five Celtic cross tombstones were broken or knocked down when vandals attacked graves at Carnmoney cemetery in Newtownabbey early on Monday.

More than 20 memorials in the same graveyard were vandalised in June. Crosses were smashed and headstones overturned in an attack blamed on loyalists.
