Two men and a woman were arrested today by detectives investigating the murder of a man beaten to death in front of his pregnant wife and children in Belfast.

The victim was bludgeoned with machetes and hatchets at his home, according to relatives. He was named by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) tonight as John Joseph Mongan (30) of Fallswater Street, Belfast.

He was attacked by a number of men shortly before 2.30am at the house in Fallswater Street in west Belfast.

Police arrested two men, aged 32 and 37, at separate addresses in Derry. It is understood that a possible link with previous clashes between Traveller families is being investigated.  A 68-year-old woman was later arrested in Derry in connection with the inquiry.

Detectives are seeking information about a large, dark-coloured vehicle that left the area around that time.
