The death toll on Irish roads continued to mount tonight when three people were killed in an horrific two-car collision in Co Limerick.

Two young men and a young woman were killed in the crash which happened on a narrow stretch of road near the village of Hospital on the Caherconlish road shortly before 7 p.m.

Firefighters had to use cutting equipment to remove the dead who were all in a Toyota Starlet which was in collision with a Toyota Avensis travelling in the opposite direction.

People at the scene said it appeaerd that the Toyota Starlet had been cut in two on impact.

The driver of the Toyota Avensis — a middle aged man — was rushed by ambulance to Limerick Regional Hospital where it's understood he remains in a serious condition.

The injured man was travelling with his wife — who amazingly escaped uninjured from the crash — but was last being treated for shock.

Gardai in Bruff in Co Limerick are waiting to notify all next of kin before releasing the names of the dead.
