Ian Thorpe won the men's 100 metres freestyle final at the Australian swimming championships today to equal a 42-year-old national record.

The Sydney teenager took the blue-riband event in a personal best time of 49.05 seconds to become the first Australian since John Konrads in 1959 to win every freestyle event from 100m to 800m at a single championships.

Thorpe defended his 400m title on Saturday, then set world records in the 800m and the 200m before completing a cleansweep in the 100m.

"It's something I didn't expect to do. I've been very lucky to get back to the form I was in before the Olympics," Thorpe said.
