Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger leader is to make his first public appearance in a decade.

Mr Vellupillai Prabhakaran will hold a news conference in Sri Lanka's northern jungles, according to a statement that appeared on the Tamil Tigers' website.

He will give the rebels' version of the island-nation's 18-year-old separatist war, the guerrilla group said.

Local and international media will be invited to gather at Kilinochchi, a war-ravaged town 170 miles north of Colombo, from where they will be taken to an undisclosed site, the statement on TamilNet said.

Mr Prabhakaran will discuss "current political developments and associated issues" and "issues related to the ongoing Norwegian peace initiative in Sri Lanka", a statement said.

The rebels and the government agreed to a Norway-brokered ceasefire in February, in preparation for peace talks in May.

The Tamil Tigers have been fighting since 1983 for a Tamil homeland, saying they are discriminated against by the majority Sinhalese. Over 64,500 people have died in the uprising.
