A Galway hospital has put a number of infection control measures in place after a number of patients were found to have symptoms similar to the winter vomiting bug.

Up to 16 patients at the Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe with gastrointestinal illness are suspected of having the virus.

The hospital has formed an committee to try and reduce the spread of the virus among staff and patients.

Visitors are being asked not to come to the hospital unless it is essential.

People who unwell or have recently suffered from vomiting or diarrhoea should not visit the hospital. Very young children should avoid visiting as they may be particularly susceptible.

Patients intending to go to Portiuncula should contact their GP before going to A&E.
