Supervalu's label for responsible fish

Supervalu says it has become the first retail network to adopt the new Responsible Irish Fish (RIF) label.

Supervalu says it has become the first retail network to adopt the new Responsible Irish Fish (RIF) label.

The label for fish and shellfish was initiated by the fishing industry with the support of Bord Iascaigh Mhara and ensures that seafood is caught by vessels involved in voluntary conservation and “clean seas” projects. The label traces the fish or shellfish back to an Irish vessel.

Supervalu says it is stocking the responsibly caught Irish fish in 70 of its 192 shops, involving five types of fresh seafood – hake, haddock, whiting, monkfish and prawns.

RIF spokesman Frank Fleming has welcomed the partnership on behalf of the industry and says it will help to maintain employment in coastal areas.
