Students may form scrum for rugby degree

Thousands of CAO students around the country may have been anxiously examining their college options yesterday

Thousands of CAO students around the country may have been anxiously examining their college options yesterday. But those with a passion for rugby will be pleased to know they can now do a three-year degree in the sport.

While other colleges offer sports-related courses and scholarships, Institute of Technology (IT) Carlow director Dr Ruaidhrí Neavyn yesterday said its ordinary level BA in sport and exercise (rugby) was the first of its type in Ireland and the UK.

Up to 20 students, both male and female, are expected to enrol on the course which is being run in association with the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) and Leinster Rugby, when it begins next month. It will combine player development, coaching and fitness with a business or communications curriculum relevant to sport.

The college says it will equip students with skills to pursue careers as rugby players, coaches and fitness instructors or in club development and management.
