Gardaí have arrested two men after an assault in New Ross early this morning.

Local Sinn Féin councillor Mr John Dwyer was attacked outside his home at around 1 a.m. when he went out to investigate a disturbance.

A Garda spokesman said Mr Dwyer was woken by a noise. Two men appeared to be breaking into a van parked outside, and when he called out to them a bottle was thrown at the house.

Mr Dwyer later went outside to check the area and was set upon by two men whom gardaí believe beat him with a bottle.

He was brought to the Regional Hospital in Wexford where he received up to 50 stitches to his head and hand. He has since been discharged and is recovering at home.

This morning gardaí arrested two men in New Ross and they are being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at New Ross Garda Station.
