A 19-year-old mechanic on the LE Eithnehas been charged with the assault of Able Seaman Brian Gorey (22) who was found dead in the River Liffey in Dublin last Sunday.

Able Mechanic Mr Seán Lundon from James Connolly Park in Tipperary town was charged in Dublin District Court this morning after his arrest yesterday.

He was remanded to appear in court again next Wednesday May 2nd with consent to bail.

He was charged under Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Persons Act. Bail was set at £150 with an independent surety of £600. Mr Lundon will also have to sign on once a week at Tipperary Garda Station.

Detective Sergeant Oliver McEnerney from Pearse Garda station said when the accused was charged he was asked if he had anything to say. The accused replied: "No".

Mr Gorey's body was found floating close to the LE Eithneearly on Sunday morning. He had served on the ship for four years.
